Even when relatively young you’ll probably find yourself coming face to face with the realities of getting old. It could be your mother, father, dear old aunt or even a neighbour.

In my case it was my mother. You expect people to get somewhat deaf as they get older and at first you just accept the situation. You just get used to talking that little bit louder and having to repeat yourself quite often.

It became a problem that couldn’t be ignored when she began to not notice that her phone was ringing. I’d ring at my usual time only for the phone not to be picked up. Then half an hour later she’d phone me and ask why I hadn’t phoned her. Then I’d point out that I had called her.

Of course we did turn the phone ringer volume up to its highest setting but normal phones just aren’t loud enough. She still kept missing calls.

So I started to look round for phones for the hard of hearing that would help the situation. The priority was to get one that had a very loud ringer which they all did, being far louder than standard phones.

The buttons on the phone had to be large as well. My mother doesn’t have the best of sight so big buttons were a must so that she could dial a number if she needed to though I programmed her most used numbers into the phone so she could access them a the touch of a single button.

As she could hear quite well once she had picked up the phone I didn’t go for one of the high amplification range. All she need was phone with average amplification to just allow her to boost up the level if she felt she needed to in the future.

All in all she’s very happy with her new hard of hearing phone as it looks like a normal phone and she’s able to use it without much fuss. This is just what you want at her age. And now I don’t have to worry about her failing to answer when I ring her up.
